Top 5 Winding Machines for Flat Yarn: Cam vs Magnetic Winders
Five winding machines for flat yarn ranked by winding speed, spindle count and tension control, with the listed figures for our S-STL-II cam winders and S-SDC magnetic winders.
The five winding machines for flat yarn below are ranked by maximum winding speed multiplied by listed spindle count (our own arithmetic, used only to order the list), with the tension-control system as the second criterion. The list is for buyers who are pairing a winder with a new or existing PP tape line and need to know which of our two series, the S-STL-Ⅱ cam winder or the S-SDC magnetic winder, matches their extruder speed and creel plan. In short: if your line's take-off speed is above 150 m/min, the S-SDC magnetic winder (rated to 280 m/min) is the only one of the two series that covers it, in the spindle count your line lists (S-SDC-344A at the top end); if your line is an SJ-FS tape drawing machine running within 150 m/min, the S-STL-Ⅱ cam winder, which its product page describes as suited to matching with a plastic tape drawing machine, does the job with a 1.5 to 2.2 kW main motor. Cam winder figures are from our catalogue; the S-SDC figures are from the product pages, as the catalogue has no S-SDC table.
Key definitions
- Flat yarn (tape): the stretched PP or HDPE strip that a circular loom weaves into sack fabric; the catalogue lists 60 to 130 tex for our high-speed extrusion lines.
- Spindle: one winding head that takes one tape onto one bobbin; a winder needs as many spindles as the slitter produces tapes.
- Layer: the rows of spindles stacked vertically on the frame; the cam winder's product page says five winding layers greatly shorten the machine's overall length.
- Linear speed of tape winding: the take-up speed in metres per minute, which must match or exceed the extrusion line's take-off speed.
- Tension control: the mechanism that keeps the pull on the tape steady as the bobbin fills; on the S-SDC series this is done by magnetic transmission.
- Bobbin dimension (D×L): the bobbin diameter and length; both series wind onto a 38×230 mm bobbin.
Comparison table
| Rank | Model | Product page | Layers | Spindles | Winding speed (m/min) | Tension control | Power (kW) | Weight (kg) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | S-STL-Ⅱ/760/Ⅱ | Cam Type Winding Machine | 5/4 | 760/752 | 80–150 | cardioid cam | 1.5×2 main + 33 winding | 13800 |
| 2 | S-SDC-344A | Inverter Control Winding Machine | 4 | 344 | 80–280 | magnetic transmission | 62 gross | 12000 |
| 3 | S-STL-Ⅱ/430 | Cam Type Winding Machine | 5/4 | 430/432 | 80–150 | cardioid cam | 2.2 main + 19 winding | 7500 |
| 4 | S-SDC-208A | Single-spindle Magnetic Winding Machine | 4 | 208 | 80–280 | magnetic transmission | 38 gross | 7400 |
| 5 | S-SDC-136A | Inverter Control Winding Machine | 4 | 136 | 80–280 | magnetic transmission | 25 gross | 4850 |
Cam type values with a slash (layers, spindles, length) are printed that way in the catalogue, for example layers 5/4 and spindles 760/752; the catalogue does not say which spindle count or length goes with which layer number. The same S-SDC table, all five models, appears on two product pages, Inverter Control Winding Machine and Single-spindle Magnetic Winding Machine; the product page named for each S-SDC model here is simply the page we link, not a different machine.
1. Cam Type Winding Machine S-STL-Ⅱ/760/Ⅱ
The largest winder in our catalogue by spindle count and weight. The S-STL-Ⅱ/760/Ⅱ is listed as 5/4 layers and 760/752 spindles and winds at 80 to 150 m/min, which puts it first on our speed × spindle ranking. The catalogue lists its main motor power as 1.5×2 kW, a 33 kW winding motor, installing dimensions of 10800/12500 × 4500 × 1700 mm and a weight of 13800 kg; the models without the second /Ⅱ in the name are listed 1500 mm wide. The product page says the cardioid cam replaces the former reciprocating shaft mechanism of the combination winding machine, giving stable movement and a flat package, and it cites patent No. ZL03203782.1. Buy it for an SJ-FS tape drawing machine when spindle count matters more than winding speed. Product page: Cam Type Winding Machine.
2. Inverter Control Winding Machine S-SDC-344A
The largest model in the S-SDC series, which is the faster of our two winder series. The S-SDC-344A winds 344 spindles in four layers at 80 to 280 m/min, with magnetic transmission keeping the tension stable while rewinding. Gross motor power is 62 kW, the machine measures 21500 × 3200 × 2000 mm and weighs 12000 kg. Its 344 spindles match the winder count listed for our YF-SPL-135/30/2000 and YF-GSPL-135/30/2000 extrusion lines (2000 mm die). The product page says the magnetic drive gives a flat, smooth package, prevents the yarn from tipping or sliding off and improves the evenness of the fabric. Buy it when output per line, not floor space, is the priority. Product page: Inverter Control Winding Machine.
3. Cam Type Winding Machine S-STL-Ⅱ/430
A cam winder from the 1500 mm-wide part of the range. The S-STL-Ⅱ/430 is listed as 5/4 layers and 430/432 spindles, winds at 80 to 150 m/min and has a 2.2 kW main motor plus a 19 kW winding motor. Its installing dimensions are listed as 11500/14250 × 1500 × 1700 mm and it weighs 7500 kg. At 1500 mm wide it is far narrower than the 3200 mm S-SDC winders. Buy it for an SJ-FS tape drawing machine whose take-off speed stays within 150 m/min. Product page: Cam Type Winding Machine.
4. Single-spindle Magnetic Winding Machine S-SDC-208A
The mid-size magnetic winder. The S-SDC-208A has 208 spindles in four layers, winds at 80 to 280 m/min, draws 38 kW gross and occupies 13000 × 3200 × 2000 mm at 7400 kg. The magnetic transmission keeps the tension stable while rewinding, so the package stays flat and smooth and the yarn does not tip or slide off. This S-SDC table is printed identically on the Inverter Control Winding Machine page. The 208-spindle count matches the winder count listed for our YF-SPL-110/30/1200 (350 kg/h) and YF-GSPL-110/30/1200 (480 kg/h) lines with a 1200 mm die. Buy it when your line calls for about 208 spindles at a winding speed above 150 m/min. Product page: Single-spindle Magnetic Winding Machine.
5. Inverter Control Winding Machine S-SDC-136A
The entry point to magnetic winding. The S-SDC-136A has 136 spindles in four layers, the same 80 to 280 m/min speed range as its larger sisters, 25 kW gross motor power, an installed size of 8500 × 3200 × 2000 mm and a weight of 4850 kg. Its 136 spindles match the winder count listed for our 800 mm die lines, YF-SPL-80/33/800 (220 kg/h) and YF-GSPL-80/33/800 (320 kg/h). At 8.5 m long it is the shortest machine on this list and the one to choose when the plant is starting with a single narrow high-speed line and wants magnetic tension control from day one rather than a cam winder that will limit the line to 150 m/min. Product page: Inverter Control Winding Machine.
How to choose
- Start from the line speed. Read the maximum linear speed of your extrusion line. Up to 150 m/min, both series work; 151 to 280 m/min, only the S-SDC magnetic series (80–280 m/min) keeps up. Neither series is rated above 280 m/min.
- Count the tapes. Each tape needs its own spindle, so the number of tapes your slitter produces is the minimum spindle count. Our lines are listed with 136, 176, 208, 256 and 344 winders for 800 to 2000 mm dies.
- Weigh tension control against motor power. The S-SDC product pages say the stable magnetic tension improves the evenness of the fabric; the S-SDC series is listed at 25 to 62 kW gross. The cam winder's product page calls it an energy-economy design, and the catalogue lists its main motor at 1.5 to 2.2 kW (1.5×2 kW on the /Ⅱ models) plus a 9 to 33 kW winding motor.
- Check the floor. Cam winders are listed 1500 mm wide (4500 mm for the models ending in /Ⅱ), with lengths printed from 5700/6750 mm (S-STL-Ⅱ/190) to 13000/15750 mm (S-STL-Ⅱ/480); S-SDC winders are 3200 mm wide and 8500 to 21500 mm long.
- Size the power. Add the winder's motor power to the line budget: 1.5 to 2.2 kW main (1.5×2 kW on the /Ⅱ models) plus 9 to 33 kW winding for the cam series, 25 to 62 kW gross for the magnetic series.
- Confirm the bobbin. Both series are listed for 38×230 mm bobbins; if you need a different bobbin, raise it in your enquiry.
Send us your extruder model, die width and tape width through the enquiry form and we will recommend a winder model and spindle count. For where the winder sits in the whole plant, from extrusion to bag sewing, read our PP woven bag machine production line guide, and see the full winding machine range and the flat yarn extrusion lines they are paired with.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between a cam type and a magnetic winding machine for flat yarn?
- The cam type winder (S-STL-II series) uses a cardioid cam in place of the reciprocating shaft mechanism of a combination winder; the catalogue lists it at 80 to 150 m/min, with spindle counts from 190/192 to 760/752 and the layer number printed as 5/4. The magnetic winder (S-SDC series) uses magnetic transmission to keep the tension stable while rewinding, winds at 80 to 280 m/min and is listed with 136 to 344 spindles in four layers.
- How fast must a winding machine run to keep up with a flat yarn extrusion line?
- At least as fast as the line's take-off speed. Our SJ-FS tape drawing machines are listed at a linear speed of 80 to 200 m/min; the S-STL-II cam winder is rated 80 to 150 m/min and the S-SDC magnetic winder 80 to 280 m/min, so above 150 m/min only the S-SDC covers the speed. Neither series is rated above 280 m/min, while our high-speed extrusion line pages are headed 280 m/min (YF-SPL) and 450 m/min (YF-GSPL); confirm the winder for a line running faster than 280 m/min with us.
- How many spindles does a flat yarn winder need?
- One spindle per tape leaving the slitter, so the count follows the die width and tape width. The S-SDC series comes in 136, 176, 208, 256 and 344 spindles, the same counts our YF-SPL and YF-GSPL extrusion lines are listed with; the S-STL-II cam series is listed from 190/192 to 760/752 spindles, and its catalogue note says the number of spindles can be arranged to the customer's requirements.
- What bobbin size do Yanfeng Group winding machines use?
- Every model in both series is listed for a 38 × 230 mm bobbin (diameter × length), the same bobbin size listed for our YF-SPL and YF-GSPL flat yarn extrusion lines.
- Why does the magnetic winder give a more even fabric?
- Our product pages state that the magnetic transmission keeps the tension stable while rewinding, which gives a flat and smooth package, prevents the yarn from tipping or sliding off, and improves the evenness of the fabric.
